WIND brings movement into the world

The wind has always been a source of fascination for mankind. In all cultures, the wind gods are numbered among the most ancient of their gods. All sorts of myths tell about the strength and irrepressible nature of these gods and their astonishing gifts and deeds. Free and unconstrained, the wind moves over the earth, shifting leaves, seeds and animals in its wake and thus contributing to the diffusion of life.

Man, too, learnt how to use the wind’s power early on. The sail is one of mankind’s first inventions, one that enabled ships to travel far further than manual strength alone could achieve and convey humans to distant shores.  Using the power of wind, mankind was able to settle in foreign lands, to engage in trade with his wind-driven ships, to transport from distant countries not only goods, but also skills, jewellery and art works.

Thus, the wind also spreads culture and cultures around the world and enables people to find out about each other, to learn about and discover each other. The wind moves and links the world together.

Our project aims to make people experience and grasp the wonderful nature of the wind. What is involved is not so much rational understanding as an intuitive experience, involving seeing, hearing and wondering, involving dreaming and opening one’s self up to feeling the wind’s action … and beyond ....

A play without words

WIND is equally suitable for children and adults, it gets along completely without words, is exclusively optically - visually designed, with the most different means of the visual art, of music and theatre, with figures, objects, projections, shadows, sails, surfaces, colours, shapes and sounds. It is universally understandable for people of each age and in every country.

WIND is all about the fascinating nature of the wind, the adventures and perils which people associate with the wind, along with the risks and the beauty, the speed and ethereal nature of the wind. It is about myths and monsters, about the stories around the wind and around the world, about dramatic and humorous incidents and about the untamed power of this natural force –  fascinating, visually impressive, full of humour and very entertaining.

„Karin Schäfer tells us the fascinating story of the winds without using any words, only by vivid, fantastical images and scenes, which enthrall everyone, irrespective of age, origin or language...“

Kurier, 11.5.2006

WIND was originally designed by Karin Schäfer especially for the World Sailing Games 2006.

In 2008 it was staged in a completely new way together with experimental musicians from the institute for transacoustic research in Vienna and it received its premiere at the Vienna Concert Hall - Konzerthaus Wien - in October 2008.
